Happy Valley Pediatric Dentistry

A New Children’s Dental Office in North Phoenix

NOW OPEN and welcoming new patients.

In the same way that pediatricians are trained to meet a child's medical needs, pediatric dentists (formerly called Pedodontists) are uniquely qualified to protect your child's oral health.   Pediatric dentists are specialists dealing with the developmental and behavioral aspects of children, and know how to make them feel comfortable, and make the experience pleasant.  Also, they are trained and qualified to treat special needs patients. Our office is designed and equipped exclusively for treating infants, young children and teens using the most advanced techniques… all in our delightfully friendly open treatment area.

In order prevent cavities and other dental problems a check-up is recommended every six months.

Your pediatric dentist can tell you when and how often your children should visit based on their personal oral health.

Examinations And Cleaning

Children smile when they are proud of their teeth. At school and at play, they feel more confident. Ask your pediatric dentist about esthetic dentistry to restore or enhance your child's smile.  Some of the procedures  available treat chipped or broken teeth, discolored teeth, mis-shapen teeth and tooth colored fillings.

Cosmetic Dentistry for Children

Your pediatric dentist may prescribe Flouride supplements if your child is not getting enough through drinking water. If your child primarily drinks bottled water without fluoride this may be necessary. Ask your pediatric dentist for an evaluation if you are concerned.

If your child needs to be seen immediately, please call the office at: (623) 516-2800. We will see your child immediately. The first 30 minutes after an accident are the most critical to treating dental trauma.  Our schedule may be delayed in order to accommodate an injured child. Please accept our apologies in advance should this occur during your appointment. We would do the same if your child were in need of emergency treatment.

Dental sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth where cavities occur most often for children.  Sealants, composed of clear or shaded plastic, are painted onto the tiny grooves in the molars.

By "sealing out" food and plaque, sealants reduce the risk of tooth decay. Sealants can be quickly and painlessly applied to any permanent teeth that are likely to develop decay on the biting surface.

Sealants

Attractive tooth colored fillings are an option in many cases.  Colored fillings use esthetic materials such as resins and porcelain for fillings or crowns. They look more natural than other filling materials and are compatible with dental sealants. Take care of a tooth-colored filling the same way you take care of a silver filling: Brush, floss, and visit your dentist.

Talk to your pediatric dentist, together you will decide what type of filling is best for your child in each situation.

Tooth Colored Fillings

When a child (or a person of any age with a disability) needs extensive dental treatment, general anesthesia is an accepted standard of care. This standard is supported by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. General anesthesia is also an accepted standard of care for situations involving children who have limited comprehension or children who are extremely uncooperative and require dental care that is technically difficult or sensitive to deliver. Pediatric dentists are carefully trained in the safe administration of sedation as part of their specialty education which lasts two to three years beyond dental school. This advanced education includes practical experience in a hospital environment.

Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps phobic or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are still conscious and can talk to their dentist during their visit. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and oxygen is administered for five to 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects wear off almost immediately. Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea and constipation. Your doctor will provide you with pre- and post-sedation instructions.

mouthguards for children playing sports

Plastic mouthguards can be used to protect a child's teeth from sport related injuries. A custom mouthguard developed by a pediatric dentist will protect your child from injuries to the teeth, face and even provide protection from severe head injuries by providing a small cushion for shock absorbing.

Patients with Special needs

A tooth fell out and left a space,

So big my tongue could touch my face

And every time I smile I show,

A space where something used to grow,

I miss my tooth as you can guess.

But then, I have to BRUSH ONE LESS!
